Cemetery

The cemetery near the historic St. Gallus Church is the oldest burial site in Kriens. What began as a medieval church burial ground gradually evolved into an intimate, park-like cemetery.
Today, it is used primarily for private urn graves and special row graves—for example, for children or well-known Kriens families such as the Bell family.
In the Middle Ages, the deceased were buried directly in the vicinity of the church. That was the custom at the time. However, Kriens grew rapidly, and eventually the space around St. Gallus Church was no longer sufficient. As a result, the much larger Anderallmend Cemetery (Friedhofstrasse 2) was established as the town’s new main cemetery.
