The Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) renewed the Catholic Church, making it more open and closer to the people.
This also sparked a comprehensive renewal of the church interior. In 1971, the communion rails were removed. The new altar was placed under the choir arch, facing the congregation. From then on, the priest celebrated the liturgy facing the congregation.
What is less well known is that the three figures in the choir arch originally stood together. In the center was the cross, with Mary, the mother of Jesus, to its right. And on the left was John, a close confidant of Jesus. It was only during this redesign that the group of figures was separated.
The choir arch serves a special purpose in our church. It forms the ceremonial transition from the nave to the altar and visually frames the front part of the church.
